Training in Pattaya heat

Everybody who moves training to Thailand from a cooler country has the same first week: the weights feel heavier, the heart rate will not settle, and the session that was routine at home is suddenly hard. That is not a fitness problem. It is a heat problem, and it resolves — if you handle it properly. This guide covers acclimatisation, sweat and sodium, when to train, and the warning signs that mean stop immediately. What Pattaya actually feels like

Pattaya has a tropical climate with no cool season in any meaningful sense. Daytime highs typically sit somewhere in the low thirties Celsius for most of the year, often around 32 to 35°C in the hotter months, with overnight lows that rarely drop far enough to reset anything. Relative humidity is high year-round and frequently sits well above seventy per cent.

Broadly there are three periods. A hot, dry stretch through roughly March to May, when the afternoon temperature is at its most punishing. A rainy period from around May to October, when the temperature is a little lower but humidity is at its worst and the rain arrives suddenly. And a slightly cooler, drier window from around November to February, which is when most visitors come and the only time outdoor midday training is anything other than a bad idea.

Those are general patterns, not a forecast. Check the actual conditions on the day, and pay more attention to humidity than to the number on the thermometer.

Why humidity matters more than temperature

This is the single most useful thing to understand, and most people arrive not knowing it.

You do not cool down by sweating. You cool down when sweat evaporates from your skin. Evaporation is what removes heat; sweat that runs off your body and drips onto the floor has cooled you almost not at all.

Evaporation depends on how much water the surrounding air can still absorb. At high humidity the air is already close to saturated, so your sweat has nowhere to go. You sweat harder, lose more fluid and salt, and get progressively less cooling for it. That is why 32°C at eighty per cent humidity is considerably more dangerous than 36°C in a dry desert climate.

Practical consequences:

  • A dry-climate heat tolerance does not transfer. If you trained in Arizona or Spain, humid heat is a different problem.
  • Moving air helps a lot. A fan does not lower the temperature but it dramatically improves evaporation. An air-conditioned room does both.
  • Soaked clothing stops working. Once a shirt is saturated it stops helping. Loose, light and changed mid-session is better.
  • Fluid losses are much higher than they feel. Because so much of the sweat is dripping rather than evaporating, you can lose a great deal without feeling especially hot.

Acclimatisation: roughly ten to fourteen days

The good news is that the human body adapts to heat well, and faster than to almost anything else in training. The general consensus is that most of the adaptation happens within about ten to fourteen days of regular exposure, with the earliest changes appearing within the first three or four days.

What adapts:

  • Plasma volume increases. More circulating fluid means the heart can supply working muscle and skin at the same time, so heart rate at a given effort comes down. This is the first and biggest change.
  • You start sweating sooner. Cooling begins earlier in the session rather than after you are already hot.
  • You sweat more, and more evenly. Greater total capacity, better distributed.
  • Your sweat gets less salty. The body becomes better at reabsorbing sodium, so you lose less of it per litre.
  • Perceived effort drops. The same session simply feels less awful.

Acclimatisation needs exposure to be maintained. Two weeks inside air conditioning and you will lose a meaningful amount of it, which is why people who return from a trip home feel like they are starting again. And it does not make you heat-proof — an acclimatised person can still get into serious trouble in extreme conditions.

Why your usual weights feel heavier in week one

Because they are effectively heavier, and it is worth knowing that nothing has gone wrong with you.

In an unacclimatised body, a large share of cardiac output gets diverted to the skin for cooling. Less blood is available for working muscle. Core temperature rises faster, heart rate at any given effort runs higher, and the sensations that normally tell you a set is finished arrive earlier. Endurance and high-repetition work suffer most; a single heavy set of five is comparatively unaffected, though the recovery between sets takes longer.

What to do about it:

  • Cut volume for the first week, not intensity. Fewer sets of the same weight. Dropping the weight and doing more reps is the wrong adjustment — it generates more heat for less stimulus.
  • Take longer rests. A rest period is also a cooling period. Resist the urge to keep it tight.
  • Judge effort by reps in reserve, not by heart rate. Heart rate is unreliable in the heat and will lie to you about how hard you are working.
  • Do not test anything in week one. Whatever you find will be a measure of your acclimatisation, not your strength.
  • Expect it to pass. Most people notice a clear improvement somewhere in the second week.

Sweat, sodium and plain water

Sweat is not water. It is water with salt in it, and if you replace only the water, you have solved half the problem.

On a genuinely sweaty session in Pattaya heat, fluid losses of a litre or more per hour are entirely normal, and the sodium going with it is significant. Drinking large volumes of plain water while losing a lot of salt dilutes what is left, which is at best why you feel flat and headachy afterwards and at worst a genuine medical problem.

A reasonable practical approach:

  • Drink to thirst plus a bit more, before, during and after. Do not wait until you are thirsty to start.
  • Add salt when sweat losses are high. Salt your food, or use an electrolyte product. Thai food makes this easy — it is generally well salted, and clear soups are a good vehicle.
  • Watch what colour you produce. Persistently dark urine suggests you are behind. Persistently clear and very frequent suggests you may be drinking a lot of water without salt.
  • Weigh yourself before and after occasionally. Short-term weight change during a session is essentially all fluid. It is the simplest way to find out what you actually lose.
  • Sports drinks are for long, sweaty sessions. For a normal weights session they are mostly sugar you did not need.
  • Alcohol afterwards works against you. Rehydrate first, then decide.

If you take diuretics, blood-pressure medication, or anything else affecting fluid or salt balance, discuss hydration in this climate with your doctor specifically. General advice written for healthy adults does not necessarily apply to you, and this is not something to work out by trial and error.

The best hours to train

If you are training outdoors or in a space without proper cooling, timing matters more than any other variable.

  • Early morning is best. Roughly from first light to around eight or nine. Lowest air temperature, no direct sun, minimum radiant heat from the ground and buildings.
  • After sunset is second best. Air temperature drops, but concrete and asphalt hold heat for hours, so a street or car park stays warm well into the evening. Grass and sea breeze help.
  • Late morning to late afternoon is the window to avoid. Roughly ten to four. Direct sun plus peak temperature plus radiant heat from every surface.

In an air-conditioned gym none of this matters much, which is one of the strongest arguments for gym training here — see gym personal training. For outdoor sessions it matters enormously, which is why Jack schedules them early or late. Condo sessions sit in between and depend entirely on how well your unit or the building gym is cooled.

Heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and when to stop

Read this properly. It is the part of the page that matters most, and the distinction is not academic.

Stop the session immediately if you notice

  • Heavy sweating with cool, clammy or pale skin
  • Feeling dizzy, faint or light-headed
  • Nausea, or a headache that is building
  • Muscle cramps
  • Feeling suddenly weak or unusually tired for the effort
  • A heart rate that will not come down between sets
  • Any loss of coordination, or feeling that something is simply wrong

That cluster is broadly what is described as heat exhaustion. The response is to stop, get out of the heat and into shade or air conditioning, get cool with wet cloths, a fan or a cool shower, lie down with the legs raised, loosen clothing, and take fluids with some salt in them if you are able to drink normally. If it does not improve within around half an hour, or it gets worse, get medical help.

Treat as a medical emergency — call for help now

Heat stroke is a different and potentially fatal condition. The features that separate it are a change in mental state and a very high body temperature:

  • Confusion, slurred speech, agitation, unusual behaviour
  • Loss of consciousness, or a seizure
  • Skin that is hot — it may be dry, or it may still be sweaty; do not use dry skin as your test
  • Very high body temperature
  • Rapid, shallow breathing and a racing pulse
  • Vomiting repeatedly, or an inability to drink

This needs emergency medical care immediately. In Thailand the emergency number is 1669 for medical services, or 191 for police. While waiting: move the person into shade or air conditioning, remove excess clothing, and cool them aggressively with water, wet cloths and air movement. Do not give fluids to somebody who is confused or not fully conscious. Do not assume that because they are still sweating it cannot be heat stroke.

Two things make this more likely and both are common in Pattaya: alcohol the night before, and pushing through the early warning signs because you did not want to cut the session short. Neither is worth it.

Air-conditioned versus open-air gyms

Pattaya has both, and the choice genuinely changes what you can train.

Air-conditioned gyms remove the problem. You can run normal volume, normal rest periods and normal high-repetition work, and the session you did at home is the session you can do here. If your goal is muscle gain or a serious strength block, this is where the heavy work belongs.

Open-air and fan-cooled gyms have their own appeal — usually cheaper, often better equipped for the money, and some people simply prefer them. The cost is that volume tolerance drops, rest periods lengthen, and the middle of the day is written off. They work well for early-morning or evening sessions.

A note on one common mistake: training in the heat deliberately, to “toughen up”, is not a strategy for building strength or muscle. Heat acclimatisation is a real and useful adaptation, and you will get it simply by living here. Deliberately degrading the quality of your resistance training to chase it costs you more than it gains.

Hot season versus rainy season

The adjustments are different, and people usually only prepare for one of them.

Hot and dry, roughly March to May. The afternoon is the enemy. Move sessions to first light, favour air conditioning for anything heavy, expect fluid needs to peak, and accept that outdoor conditioning work is limited to a narrow window at either end of the day.

Rainy, roughly May to October. Slightly lower temperatures, considerably higher humidity, and evaporation at its worst. Cooling is less effective than the thermometer suggests, so keep an eye on effort even when it feels mild. Rain arrives fast, so outdoor sessions need a plan B — usually a condo or gym session. On the positive side, the hour after heavy rain is often the most pleasant training window of the entire day.

Cooler and drier, roughly November to February. The best training months. Outdoor sessions open up, volume tolerance rises, and this is when to schedule a demanding block if you have the choice. Do not be surprised if your numbers jump; some of that is simply the weather.

A note if you take medication

What is worth knowing is that a number of common medications affect how the body handles heat, fluid and salt. Diuretics and several blood-pressure drugs alter fluid balance. Beta blockers hold heart rate down, which removes one of your gauges of effort. Some medications reduce sweating or affect thermoregulation. Others increase skin sensitivity to sun.

If you take anything regularly, ask your doctor or pharmacist specifically about exercising in a hot, humid climate and about how much you should be drinking. Do not assume general advice written for healthy adults applies. This matters most for older adults, who thermoregulate less efficiently and get less warning from thirst — there is more on that in personal training over 50.

Also see a doctor before training in this climate if you have a heart condition, uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes, kidney problems, a history of heat illness, or if you are pregnant. Heat adds a load that changes those calculations.
